Volunteers Help Us Make a Difference

Douglas Memorial Hospital and Urgent Care Centre has been an integral part of Fort Erie and surrounding areas since 1931.  Now in 2025 when our Canadian Healthcare System has taken a back seat to other government interests we find ourselves in a state of disrepair.  All levels of government have said that they want to maintain our public healthcare system yet very little has been done; particularly in smaller locations – the answer seems to be to just head into the large urban hospital when you are not well (if you have a vehicle) or wait and call your Doctor in the morning (if you have one), or go to the clinic in the morning (that’s if your Doctor will see you again as patients are often told to avoid going to clinics if you have a physician), or go see your Pharmacist for the little stuff, call an ambulance (if you are able) or simply wait and see if you get better on your own because otherwise you are clogging up the hospital that should be used for REAL Emergencies, not the emergency that you are having.  Waiting sometimes for up to 8 or more hours to see a Doctor in Emergency doesn’t seem to be a mismanaged system?  We need more Nurses, Doctors, all levels of help in our hospitals and yet our Ontario Government knew the system was overloaded but waited to open up more education seats (that can take two to six years to complete) or will bring in help at sometimes double the cost.

Come on people our Health Boards and administrators are being paid a lot of money to figure this stuff out, what pray tell seems to be the hold up.

In the mean time Fort Erie Healthcare SOS and other like minded groups of volunteers must keep speaking up to catch the attention of the people that can help to put together a proper plan to fix the issues faced in our healthcare system.  Often people aren’t thinking about their healthcare when all is well, but its when things fail and they try to get help and none is available that the real efforts are put into assisting.  Please don’t wait; now is the time and if you have a minute to sign the petition or send a letter to the Ministry or want to assist getting out the message in person, give us a call (905-993-2078) or email us at fo******@***********os.net
