Stay away

Most people that become ill wait to seek help, often for days or weeks until we finally can't take it anymore and we seek help in a hurry because we know that our delay may have taken an even worse toll on our health than when it first presented itself.

Stay away seems to be the message in the latest post from the Chief of Emergency Medicine at Niagara Health. His recent published article gives us 6 options to choose from when experiencing a health issue.

  1. Call telehealth or Health811 and this will connect you with a registered nurse to discuss your issue. Let's just hope you haven't wasted precious time

  2. Call your Doctor and see if they can see you right now. Imagine thinking that our Doctors are sitting around waiting for patients to come in. More than likely this is going to require to book a time hopefully within a few hours but more than likely a few days. Again lets hope your health issue can just wait.

  3. Go to your local pharmacist and let them know what your issue is they just may be able to prescribe something for you, oh and then call them in the morning if it hasn't helped. This trial and error system is a problem for many people and often times we even experience this if we are lucky enough to have a Doctor. Let's hope that our health issue can just wait.

  4. Visit UrgentCareOntario.ca where you can get same-day care from the comfort of your own home. This does require a wifi system and a computer or smart phone. Let's hope that our health issue can just wait till we are connected.

  5. If you are able to self diagnose and determine that you have a sprain, a cut, mild asthma, a fever and other minor illness visit an Urgent Care Centre, of course you will have to do this during regular business hours. Let's hope that our health issue can just wait.

  6. For severe injuries, chest pain, breathing trouble, unconciousness and life threatening emergencies go to the Emergency Department, call 911. Let's all hope that its not too late at this point.

Fort Erie Healthcare SOS is trying to provide Urgent Care for our community and we are asking to have this service restored 24/7. We know that we are short Doctors and Registered Nurses, Diagnostic Technicians and other critical people to work in our Hospital. We need Niagara Ontario Health Team, Niagara Health and the Minister of Health to understand that we can provide relief for their systems that are overcrowded and creating a backlog not just in Emergency but this also affects preventative care in diagnosis, surgery and aftercare.

We need to speak up loud and clear we are here to help - We need to restore 24/7 Urgent Care at Douglas Memorial and we need to SAVE OUR HOSPITAL
